Scottish National set to take place on Sunday 18th April at 3:35pm

Scottish National 2021

The Scottish National is one of the richest and most popular races on the UK circuit and this year the event will take place at 3:35pm on Sunday, 18th April 2021.

Traditionally the Scottish National takes place on the Saturday following the Aintree Grand National, however in a break with tradition the race will instead take place on Sunday 18th April. This delay has been planned as a mark of respect to Prince Philip whose funeral takes place at 3pm on Saturday 17th April and the British Horseracing Authority has announced that no racing will take place in the UK between 2:45pm and 4:15 of that day. While the Scottish National itself has been pushed back 24 hours, the opening day of the meeting will still take place on Friday 16th April.

As mentioned above, the Scottish Grand National is one of the richest races in the UK with a prize fund totalling £150,000. This makes it the joint-second richest handicap race in the country behind the Aintree Grand National.

The last Scottish National took place in 2019 and this race was won by Takingrisks at 25/1. The 2020 race was cancelled as a direct result of the Covid19 outbreak and racing aficionados will be eagerly awaiting the return of the race this weekend.

When is the Scottish National?

The 2021 Scottish National has been delayed by 24 hours due to the funeral of Prince Philip and will now take place on Sunday 18th April 2021. The start of the two-day meeting has been kept at Friday 16th April.

What time does the feature race start?

The National itself is scheduled to get underway at 3:35pm and it takes place over a distance of roughly four miles. 30 runners will contest this Class 1 Grade 3 chase and many of the top UK stables will be represented here. Past winners include Grey Abbey, Merigo (twice), Vicente (twice) and the legendary Red Rum who became the only horse to win both the Grand National and Scottish National in the same year when he finished first past the post in 1974.

Where can I watch the race?

No members of the general public will be allowed to enter Ayr Racecourse this weekend and as such the only place where you can see the race live will be on TV. For the third year running ITV will provide live coverage of the Scottish National and you can watch all the races in the two-day meeting at RacingTV.
