Update: 06.01.21

Portsmouth may have fallen from pole position in the League One table, however they have been out of action since 18th December when they enjoyed a 2-0 win over fellow promotion-hopefuls Hull City. The bookies remain confident that Kenny Jackett’s men will finish in pole position and clinch the League One title at the end of the season, some firms going as low as 7/4 that this proves to be the case.

As things stand, Lincoln City sit proudly at the top of the division with four points separating hem from second-placed Hull City, however the Imps have played one game more than the sides immediately below them in the league table and they are third-favourites in the ‘League One Winner’ betting market at odds of 9/2, behind 7/2 shots Hull City who currently sit second in the division.

Lincoln have thus far enjoyed an excellent campaign with thirteen wins from their twenty league outings. This impressive form continued on Saturday afternoon when they won 2-1 away to AFC Wimbledon, this taking their goal-count to eleven from three outings.

Update: 29.12.20

Portsmouth continued their excellent form when they beat fellow promotion-hopefuls Hull City 2-0 at the KCOM Stadium in their last outing on 18th December and the bookmakers reacted by shortening the odds on them winning the League One title at the end of the campaign. Most firms now go just 2/1 that Kenny Jackett’s side finish in pole position and win automatic promotion to the Championship while the odds on former favourites Hull City have moved in the opposite direction, some firms going 9/2 on the Tigers making an immediate return back to the second tier.

Lincoln City currently sit in pole position in the League One table, the Imps also enjoying an excellent season thus far with wins in twelve of their nineteen league outings and just five defeats during that time. Lincoln’s excellent form continued on Boxing Day when they thrashed Burton Albion to the tune of 5-1 at Sincil Bank and they have now scored ten goals in their last three outings, an excellent response to their 4-0 drubbing to Sunderland earlier this month. The Imps are a general 6/1 punt for the League One title while Sunderland have moved out slightly to 7/1 following their disappointing 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon last time out.

Update: 23.12.20

Portsmouth have surged to the top of the League One table on the back of an excellent run, the south-coast side having beaten former leaders Hull City to the tune of 2-0 at the KCOM Stadium last time out. Kenny Jackett’s men have lost just four of their nineteen league games thus far and they sit in pole position with goal-difference separating them from second-placed Lincoln City.

Pompey have had their League One Title betting odds slashed to just 9/4 over the past few days while former market leaders Hull City are out to 4/1. The Tigers have picked up just a single point from their last four league outings and having lost their last three, it would appear that they have lost their way somewhat following their excellent start to the campaign.

Sunderland are 6/1 to finish top of the pile in League One despite them having won just one of their last seven league games while second-placed Lincoln City are an 8/1 punt, ahead of Charlton Athletic and Doncaster Rovers at 12/1 apiece.

9/4  –  Portsmouth

12/1 –  Charlton Athletic

12/1 –  Doncaster Rovers

Update: 16.12.20

It was more disappointment for League One leaders Hull City last night as they lost 3-2 to Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, the Tigers’ lead at the top of the division now down to just two points. Grant McCann’s men do enjoy a game-in-hand over most of the sides immediately below them in the league table although with four teams sitting just two points below them, there isn’t any room for any further slip-ups.

The East Yorkshire outfit have now managed just one win (in 90 minutes) from their last six games across competitions and they have lost two league games in succession with just a single point collected from their last three. This isn’t the sort of form one generally associates with title winners and McCann will be desperate to see some improvement when his side entertain title rivals Portsmouth at the KCOM Stadium on Friday evening.

Portsmouth sit second in the League One table as things stand and victory for the south-coast side on Friday would see them storm to the summit of the division. Pompey have been enjoying some excellent form in recent weeks and they are second in the betting to win the title at odds of 11/4.

Sunderland could only manage a 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon at the Stadium of Light last night, however they are still attracting the attention of punters with their title odds shortening slightly to 6/1, the same as third-placed Peterborough United.

League One Winner Odds from William Hill Bookmakers

5/2  –  Hull City

11/4 –  Portsmouth

6/1  –  Sunderland

6/1  –  Peterborough United

10/1 –  Lincoln City

12/1 –  Charlton Athletic

12/1 –  Doncaster Rovers

Update: 15.12.20

Following their 1-1 draw with Oxford United earlier this month, Hull City’s title ambitions were dealt another blow at the weekend when they lost 1-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town. The Tigers were somewhat lacklustre at the KCOM Stadium and with just one win from their last five across competitions (in 90 minutes), manager Grant McCann will be desperate for this disappointing run to come to an end.

The bookmakers remain of the opinion that Hull City will finish the campaign in pole position in the League One table despite this poor run, most firms going around 9/4 that they clinch the title and 8/11 that they haul themselves straight back to the Championship at the first time of asking, whether automatically or via the play-offs.

Portsmouth remain second favourites to finish the season as League One champions, the south-coast outfit having won their second league game to nil thanks to a 2-0 victory over promotion rivals Ipswich Town at Portman Road last time out. Pompey are now a general 7/2 shot for the title, having been as high as 11/2 prior to their weekend win.

Sunderland are next in the title betting market at odds of 13/2 while Lincoln City are a general 15/2 punt.

14/1 –  Doncaster Rovers

28/1 –  Blackpool

Update: 10.12.20

Hull City could only manage a share of the spoils at the weekend thanks to a 1-1 draw away to Oxford United, however they remain firmly at the summit of the League One table with two points separating them from second-placed Lincoln City and five points separating them from third-placed Ipswich Town. The bookmakers remain confident that the Tigers can make an immediate return back to the Championship at the first time of asking with most firms going just 7/4 that McCann’s men win the League One title and 4/6 that they win promotion whether automatically or via the play-offs.

Hull City dropped down from the Championship at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, the side having lost 25 of their 46 league games with just 12 wins during this time. Most pundits believed that they would be challenging for promotion in 2020/21 and thus far things are looking good for the East Yorkshire outfit.

The Tigers will be confident of securing all three points when they face struggling Shrewsbury Town at the KCOM Stadium this weekend, such an outcome certain to result in their title odds shortening even further. Second-placed Lincoln City face a tough assignment when they entertain Sunderland at Sincil Bank, the Black Cats desperate to bounce back from some disappointing recent results. Third-placed Ipswich Town and fourth-placed Portsmouth lock horns with each other at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon while Peterborough United host Rochdale at London Road.

Lincoln City sit second in the League One table as things stand and they are a general 7/1 shot for the title, the same odds as Sunderland whose promotion bid suffered a setback at the weekend when they were beaten 1-0 at home to Wigan Athletic. The Black Cats have failed to win any of their last seven games in all competitions (five in the league) and given that they sit in 9th position in the division with just six wins from their fifteen league matches, it’s hard to understand just why they are joint third-favourites for promotion behind 11/2 shots Portsmouth.

League One Winner Odds from William Hill Bookmakers

7/4  –  Hull City

11/2 –  Portsmouth

7/1  –  Lincoln City

7/1  –  Sunderland

7/1  –  Peterborough United

10/1 –  Charlton Athletic

18/1 –  Doncaster Rovers

Update: 03.12.20

The odds on Hull City clinching the League One title and hauling themselves straight back up to the Championship at the first time of asking continue to tumble. The Tigers grabbed their fourth League One win on the bounce when they edged past Doncaster Rovers to the tune of 2-1 on Wednesday evening and they now sit four points clear of second-placed Lincoln City in the league table.

Grant McCann’s men have won eleven of their fourteen league games with just three defeats during this time, while they have won seven of their last eight games across all competitions with their sole defeat coming in the FA Cup courtesy of a penalty shoot-out.

The bookmakers now go just 9/4 that Hull City win promotion back to the Championship as League One champions while they go odds-on at 8/11 that they win promotion, whether by automatic promotion or via the play-offs. Second in the ‘League One Winner’ market are Sunderland and Peterborough United at 6/1 apiece. Portsmouth come next at odds of 13/2 with Lincoln City and Charlton Athletic 8/1 and 9/1 respectively.

9/1  –  Charlton Athletic

20/1 –  Doncaster Rovers

Update: 25.11.20

Hull City have hauled themselves back into pole position in the League One table and the bookmakers have them priced-up as favourites to win the title at the end of the season. The Tigers have certainly been enjoying some excellent form across competitions since the start of the month, Grant McCann’s men winning six games on the bounce including three in the league and scoring fifteen goals during this time with just one conceded in the process.

On the back of this excellent run, Hull have stormed to the top of the League Two table with two points separating them from second-placed Peterborough United and the side enjoying a game-in-hand over the Posh.

League One is proving to be a hugely competitive division once again and Hull City face some stiff competition from some strong sides as they push for promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking. Indeed the likes of Sunderland, Peterborough United, Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Charlton Athletic are all expected to be pushing for automatic promotion towards the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether Hull City can last the pace.

The bookies feel that they can, most firms making the Tigers 3/1 favourites to haul themselves straight back into the Championship at the first attempt following their relegation at the end of 2019/20. Peterborough United are next in the betting at odds of 4/1 while Portsmouth and Sunderland are 5/1 apiece.

Update: 11.11.20

Hull City’s ambitions of making it straight back to the Championship at the first time of asking haven’t exactly gone up in smoke but they have been dealt a blow in recent weeks. Grant McCann’s men dropped down from the Championship at the end of last season and many pundits were tipping them to make an immediate return to the second tier, however it is clear that they are going to have a tough battle in what is proving to be a hugely competitive division.

The Tigers got things off to a solid start but they appear to have lost their way somewhat in recent weeks. McCann’s side have lost two of their last three League One outings and have slid down the league table as a result, the Tigers now sitting in fifth position. On the whole, the East Yorkshire outfit have been steady enough since the start of the campaign with seven wins from their opening ten games, however the bookmakers are becoming less confident of their chances of making it up to the Championship at the end of 2020/21. Most firms have lengthened the odds on Hull City finding themselves back in the second tier next term to 5/2. In contrast, Sunderland – who sit level on points with the Tigers after ten games – are odds-on favourites to win promotion this season at 4/5, while Peterborough United and Portsmouth are 4/5 and 7/4 respectively.

League One Promotion Odds from William Hill Bookmakers

4/5  –  Sunderland

4/5  –  Peterborough United

29.10.20

Hull City’s 2019/20 campaign was an unmitigated disaster and it was little surprise when they succumbed to the inevitable and dropped down from the Championship into League One. Nevertheless many punters are backing them for an immediate return to the second-tier and Grant McCann’s men have certainly got things off to a fine start.

After nine league games, the Tigers sit second in the League One table with seven wins and two defeats to their name. Just a single point separates them from table-topping Lincoln City as things stand and the bookmakers have them chalked in at 5/1 for the League One title and 6/4 for promotion, irrespective of whether they achieve it automatically or via the play-offs.

Favourites to haul themselves into the Championship are Sunderland who were relegated into the third tier just two seasons ago. The Black Cats’ fall from grace has been pretty swift with relegation from the Premier League followed by a second successive relegation. The Wearside outfit were unable to negotiate the play-offs at the end of last season but the bookmakers go Evens that they wave goodbye to League One at the end of 2020/21.

Peterborough United and Portsmouth have both got things off to a flying start in the 2020/21 League One campaign and they are 11/10 and 6/4 respectively to find themselves in the Championship next season. Current league leaders Lincoln City are a 5/2 shot for promotion while newly-relegated Ipswich Town are an 11/4 punt to return back from whence they came at the end of last term.
