Queens Park Rangers v Reading Preview & TipsBy glen,
Queens Park Rangers never really got going in 2016/17 and it was hardly a surprise to see them finish the campaign so close to the drop zone. Just two points separated the Loftus Road outfit from the bottom three as the season drew to a close and the side have hardly impressed in their pre-season preparations with their last three outings ending in defeat to Norwich City (4-0), Lokomotiv Leipzig (3-2) and AFC Bournemouth (1-0).
In complete contrast, visitors Reading finished the regular 2016/17 season in third place and whilst they stumbled in the play-offs and failed to make it into the Premier League, there is little evidence to suggest that they won’t mount a serious challenge in the season ahead. Like QPR they didn’t impress in their pre-season campaign but they avoided defeat to the likes of Sparta Rotterdam and Circle Brugge and they should prove too strong for the hosts at Loftus Road this weekend.
Reading boss Jaap Stam will be looking to put his side in promotion contention once again and whilst the Royals have been relatively quiet on the transfer front, Stam has been realistic about the sort of money which is available to him.
“There’s some money available, but we can’t spend £15m like other teams have,” he said to the local BBC radio.
“We’re looking for certain players that can make a difference.”
“We can’t go out and buy 10 players,” he said. “We need to be inventive in what kind of player we can bring to the club.
“We’re still talking with several players and hopefully we can get them done as quickly as possible.”
Nevertheless despite injuries to new signings Joey van den Berg and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson sustained during the defeat to Vitesse, Stam is confident that they will both take to the pitch in the side’s Championship opener at Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon and we believe that the Royals will have little problem launching their 2017/18 in excellent fashion by heading home from West London with the spoils very much in the bag.
